Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I get considered for Phi Beta Kappa?  Do I need to apply?

You do not need to apply; membership is by invitation only.  Students are evaluated on the basis of their academic record and breadth of program in the liberal arts and sciences.  The election criteria ("stipulations") are listed at https://www.pbk.org/Membership/Requirements.

2. Do I have to be a liberal arts major to be selected?

All students are eligible, but there must be a strong liberal arts and sciences component to your program of study.

3. If I am invited to join, am I automatically a member of Phi Beta Kappa?

No, you must accept the invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa.  Registering your membership requires a one-time initiation fee, which funds the activities of the Phi Beta Kappa society and the initiation ceremony.  Once you accept membership, you are a lifetime member.  There are no additional fees.
